An RCD, or residual current device, is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something running a live electric current, such as a bare wire. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires.
Modern electrical safety standards require that all circuits in the home are protected by an RCD. This is most usually done at the Consumer Unit (you might also hear this referred to as a Fusebox or Distribution Board). Sokket (and any good electrician) will only carry out work on a circuit which is protected by an RCD (all modern Consumer Units include RCD protection). If you have an older Consumer Unit installed which does not have RCD protection, we will not be able to carry out work at your property, and we strongly recommend that you have the Consumer Unit replaced regardless of any other work you may wish carried out.
You can read more about RCD protection and why it is so important at Electrical Safety First.
